coolant leak

My 65 F100 has a coolant leak when I drive more than about 20 miles, which rarely happens. The temp gauge is just barely elevated. I am having a hard time finding the leaky hose. What is the best way to finding the leaky hose?

Might not be a leaky hose, it could be a leaky core plug or a leaky heater core-the floor will be damp on the right side. Could be the radiator, or a bad radiator cap. The waterpump could be leaking too.

Aah, Could be another issue, You may be filling the radiator too full. Keep your distilled water 50/50 antifreeze mix about 2" down from the neck.

In other words let it puke the mix and then watch the level to see if it stabilizes.

Dead on! Mine will puke out any through the overflow outlet if I fill it full. Then it will steady out about 1" bellow the cap.
Q, if we add an overflow bottle will it contain the full radiator?
Always figured it would be better than letting it puke it out.

Frank, The bottle works, but so does leaving it down, and that is free.

Aint no bottle on my truck.

I was checking around the water pump and it looks okay.

Would a pressure test help out here?

Assuming the rubber is fine and the clamps are in decent shape, I'd look for signs of rust or rusty water drips on the engine block, around the thermostat housing, or cylinder heads.

Does it puddle on the ground anywhere?

Definitely pressurize the system to find the leak. If it's an FE it could be leaking out the corners of the intake gasket.
I put an overflow tank on my 63 and got rid of the green puke out on my driveway. When I check the coolant level, cold in the morning it's always right at the bottom of the filler neck

Yes, it rolling down the block and ending up just under the oil drain plug. It is not constant and has only happened after a relatively long drive.

Frank, I guess I am pretty cheep.
We are getting some of the much needed rain, It is amazing to see how sections of Texas are getting washed away and the the south east corner of the US is paper dry.

Technology has changed a lot in the last 50 years. I learned years ago that the sun will draw gas out of a nearly full gas tank, and coolant fluids will seek their own lever.

Never fill your gas tank in the summer time when you are not gonna drive 3-5 gallons out, and park it out in the sun. If you have to park it out with a full tank, park it drivers side higher. Park it with the left rear wheel on the curb if you have to.

Never fill your radiator that doesn't have a recovery system all the way to the top........or let it show you what level it wants by puking off the top.

I can't see the radiator in my Taurus and have to fill it through the expansion tank.

Yall can look all you want for something that aint there if it makes you happy.

Leaky radiator core?

I have seen radiator fluid on the passenger side floorboard the last few times I have operated my '65. Under the hood I found some moisture on the firewall near the heater hose and tightened the clamps. This stopped the moisture on the firewall, but I still have fluid on the floorboard. Is it likely that the heater core is full of fluid from the heater hose and that fluid just needs to clear out or could I have a leaky core?

John, Sounds to me like you need a new heater core. I think you will need to ask for one in the mid 70s. Many stores don't carry them back to the 60s, and the mid 70s works as it is the same.
