I'm looking for an 87-96 Diesel 250. I was wondering what the average life expectancy was for the engines. I know a lot depends on the owner, but a general idea of whats good and what ain't would be nice.
The 7.3L IDI diesel was offered in ford trucks from 1988-1994 with a turbo option avalable in 1994. The powerstroke was offered from 1994 and up, the 7.3 powerstroke goes to 2003 I think. The 94 and up trucks are completely computer integrated.
The 7.3L IDI can last beyond 500 000 miles if well cared for, but after that, they are not easy to overhaul properly. The 7.3L does not have enough meat in the cylinder wall to accept reborring safely.
The auto trans in the pre95 trucks can be problematic, if the seller claims that it has a reman, try to find out who did it, and what upgrades they normally put in them (ford remans are usually good enough). If you notice a blinking OD light , don't walk, run, E4ODs are not cheap to overhaul.
my dad has a 1990 f-350 7.3 liter diesel it has 734,000 miles he had the heads redone in the early 300,000's he has put 1 clutch in it around the 400,000 mark and a ring and pinnon recently the truck is still going strong every day
