Towing mileage really BITES!

Memorial Day weekend I towed a 7500 lb trailer from Riverside, CA to Cedaredge, Co and avg 16.5 mpg on the trip. My truck is your basic stock 2001 4x4 C/C. The only things I've done to it, is have John Wood rebuild the trans, & install a DP tune & gages.
I towed at 71 mph locked in cruise control for most of the trip, and had the DP set on 60 tow for the most part. I did drop it down to 40 tow when I saw my exhaust temps creep up (twice).
Although I have not noticed any difference in the mpg when not towing I did gain 3 mpg with the trailer attached. I seem to get the best mileage in the 60 tow mode.
