Another "Love my DP Tuner" post!

Have had my DP Tuner in my 2003 Johnny Cash mongrel truck (2003 body, e99 motor and chasis), and I gotta say, it's amazing. The difference in how the truck runs makes me want to go out and drive it 40 times a day!!

The 40 hp Tow tune worked incredible the other day...I loaded 4 horses into my 11.5 k trailer, which took the weight up to around 16 k...and the truck pulled it up some really steep (but short) gravel road hills. I also kept it at 65 in cruise on the interstate with no problem. EGT never went over 1100 and tranny temp never went over 160. Before...it was almost impossible to use cruise at 65 with all 4 horses...it would shift constantly trying to keep speed.

The 80 hp Econo is a blast...I don't drive hard with it, but the acceleration is so much better than before. It has also improved my mileage. I was getting about 15.5 empty with a mix of city/hiway driving. I drove an entire tank with the 80 hp econo tune, and I got almost 18 mpg. I filled the tank up to the very top (the 30 minutes of drizzling it in at the pump routine), so I'm pretty sure it's accurate.

Here's a quick question: How does the 80 hp tune work? What does it do that it can give you more hp and acceleration, but better fuel economy? Seems contradictory to me...but in the real world, it works!!

Congratulations and welcome to the club. As for what the tune does, I can only give you a basic description. It changes the timing curve and plays with the injection and combustion event. It does iy in a way that the engine becomes more efficient than what Ford stock programming will allow for. It probably isn't as emissions friendly as the Ford programming and it certainly isn't what Ford had in mind, but it is useful, obviously. The Ford engineers know what these trucks where capable of I'm sure, but they have a lot of government mandated parameters to work with that the performance minded aftermarket tuner can all but ignore.

I am sure some of the more technically knowledgeable posters can fill in a lot more detail than I can.
