Yep, I'm in the Air Force. I'm stationed at Ramstein Air Base. I really never thought I would be, but my brother said that this was the best place to be over seas, so now that I'm here it's great just no auto parts stores. Here people don't work on their own cars they take'm to a mechanic shop. They say if your not a professional then you shouldn't touch it. Infact it is illegal to simply work on your car or wash it at your house unless you have a garage you can put it inside. Crazy huh?
My brother was stationed at Ramstein AB and I was at Zweibrucken AB. There was an auto parts store in Zweibrucken that I used to go to when I needed parts for my BMW. I'm not sure about the spelling, but I believe the name of the place was Auto Friesen or something like that.
The owner spoke enough English that between my German and his English we understood each other. My mother-in-law used to work there, cleaning up and stuff like that. The owner would deduct the VAT amount so you didn't need to go through the VAT office on base. Very good place. If it's still there, you might check it out.
BTW...most of the electric fans I've checked have an integrated shroud as part of the replacement mounting assembly. They mount to the radiator core support in place of the mechanical fan's shroud.
It is pretty dumb about the whole working on your own car thing, but I think the Germans are coming around cause I do have a part store. Its not like a napa, but it will order you almost anything in just a couple of days. The owner knows me by name, face and by cars. I get a discount just cause he knows I'll be back and I bring anybody else I know, but thanks for the tip. Anything will help out here in the land of the little, cars that is.
