I just got a 66 Bronco and it seems like the wipers are poorly installed/designed. When I drive in the rain, the wipers only move when I take my foot off the gas. Is this normal? What can I do to upgrade this kit?

It is normal for vacuum powered wipers to slow down or even stop when you are under a heavy load or accelerating, but under normal crusing speeds and idiling, they should function. Look for leaks, and check your vacuum with a guage. Probably the most difficult part to convert to electric wipers would be wiring and adding a switch. I never have seen the Bronco vacuum wiper system, so I really can't say if the motor itself is a direct swap, but I think I remember seeing one of the early Bronco parts suppliers confront the issue with some sort of adapter kit.

Maybe try installing a vacuum can on the system.
They are on practially every truck & car.
They look like a black tomato juice can.

That's a good point, Dennis. If the can is not enough you might be able to get a vacuum pump (oxymoron?) and hook it only the the wiper vacuum circut. Wiring-in an auxilary pump and connecting a hose or two would be a lot easier than converting the whole wiper system to electric.

The vacuum pump is on top of the fuel pump.
I've got a whole electric set up with wire harness if you wish to convert.

Vac operated wipers(in my book) ned to be left on it....We redid a 66 that friend has and just replaced all of the vac lines with new stuff and it worked fine.

its not a direct swap at least not with bronco wipers from later years (ie my 77 electric setup does not swap into my 67 bronco windshield frame.) The holes are not the same size or in the same location. If you really want electric wipers you could do what i did and sawzall the top of the windshield frame and replace it with the top of a later models windshield frame. then the wipers will fit but the top mounting holes wont all line up. but drilling new ones is not difficult.

I also just bought a '66 Bronco with vacuum wipers that suck, pun intended. I ordered an electric conversion kit from Toms Bronco Parts. It hasn't got here yet,but I,ll Let you know how it worked out.

Update: I recieved my electric wiper kit from Tom, it took me about three days and a lot of cussing and fabricating to make it work. The kit is not designed well. If you put it in according to the directions the wipers do not have enough stroke. They will either park in your field of vision or they wont wipe all the way across. If you go this route then be ready to do some major modifying to the kit.
