as to the coolent flow, if you are using the water pump from the new engine you should be fine. The Ranger water pump may be different though than the windstar pump if the new engine did not come with the pump.

Here's what I found about the coolant issue...the coolant passages on the 2 engines are different. Based on what I read, I suspect the only problem I would encounter would be if I used the 95 heads on the 98 block. Then it would be possible to interfere with the coolant flow if the head gaskets are done incorrectly.

I did have to use the '98 water pump to enable the pulleys to properly line-up with the alternator pulley, the main drive pulley and such. The only difference between the 2 was the length of the water pump drive shaft. It's longer on the '98 model.

Drilling the flywheel might be an issue, but in addition I'd have to either modify the torque converter shaft or the recess in the rear of the crankshaft. I am playing wiht that idea though.

Well, after 3 weeks of trying everything under the sun t make this work I'm throwing in the towel and writing this off as a loss. I tried modifying the original flywheel - no good. I tried modifying the torque converter - no good. I tried a torque converter from a Windstar - no good. I tried modifying the end of the crank - no good. Nothing I do seems to make this go together. So...for those of you who told me this would work...YOU WERE WRONG! All engine externals (manifolds, ignition, sensors, water pump, etc.) bolted right on, but the transmission WILL NOT interchange.

Anybody want to buy a good Windstar engine?

can't you swap the crank from the old motor(after getting the machine work done of course)?

The crank from the old engine is toast...spun a bearing, which in turn broke a rod cap. Besides, if I'm going to go to that much trouble I might as well just rebuild the old engine.

I had a aerostar with the 3.0, it was rwd and that thing would run. I know it's the same 3.0 thats in the ranger, but it sure was faster in the van than in a ranger.

That's the problem with the internet, opinions and assumed infomation become facts. NEVER trust infomation given unless the person has done the work themself or can name a source better than "My freind's brother told me...". I had this same problem when I said I was going to put a 4.6 dohc into my Ranger. I was told it wouldn't fit, it would cost $20K, and I'd have to modify EVERYTHING. Guess what, they were all wrong.

Sorry you had to go through 3 weeks of hell.

Can you get a picture of this by chance???

All the engine parts swapped over without any problem, but when I went to install the torque converter the bolts did not line up with the holes in the flywheel. No problem, I just swapped the one from the original engine. I did notice the orignal was "deeper" than the one that came on the engine I bought. When I went to marry the transmission to the block, it wouldn't go. There was about a 1/2" gap between the block and the transmission housing. So what I need to do is find a flywheel that is the depth of supplied flywhell, but has the bolt pattern for the original flywheel.

That's not all though. Upon close examination I found that the recess in the back end of the crankshaft is different on the 2 engines. On the original engine the recess is one consistent size where as on the replacement it starts out the same size but about 2/3 of the way in it becomes smaller. Small enough that even if the flywheel were right I don't think the torque converter would go in far enough to allow the tranmission bolts to tighten.

Anybody got any solutions for this? I really need to get this finished as soon as possible so any advice would be most appreciated.
