Ok, I picked up an 83 Bronco the other day....the moron I bought it from ran it low on oil and pushed it hard, burned the rings up, so I got a deal...I found another 302, but with the problems I've had and heard of in the past, I'm a bit leary as to whether or not I should put another 302 in there....I was told a 351 Winsor would bolt in fine....I always thought the 351 Clevelands and 351M400's were basically the same as a 302 and the winsors were different....I had one guy tell me a cleveland is a big block????
Anyway, what will bolt into a 1983 Bronco with a C-6 4x4 besides the 302? I've heard all kinds of rumors, but they don't pan out...Thanks
A 302 and 351 Winsor are very similar; same motor mounts, trans bolt pattern, cam, water pump, heads - except for bolt diameter. The difference is the stroke (3.0 for 302 and 3.5 for 351). As a result the 351W sits up a little higher and therefor has a different intake manifold. A great swap is dropping in a 351w after pulling a 302 since it is essentially a bolt-in. There are some differences in accessory bracketry, and the oil pans are NOT interchangeable. The 351c is in a class all by itself but has some similarities with the 351M/400 but basically none with the Winsor variety. The 351M and 400 use the exact same block and differ only in stroke. HTH
i just finished swapping a 351m in place of a 302. if you plan to do this be sure to get a c-6 with a big block bell housing pattern. the 302 and windsor are small. i used the engine and tranny from a 79 f250(351 & c-6), but kept the np208 tcase for the lower gears than the 205 from the 79. the engine and tranny were about
2 in. shorter so i had to move the tcase adapter closer. i haven't driven it yet but i sounds sooo good. a helpful hint when gettin parts from the auto parts store is that the 1980 bronco came with a 351m...
