Question Car 351 Winsor and Bell housing question.. help

Help... (Sorry don't know of a car site to ask...

I recently purchased an old 64 Ford Galaxie 500. I found it had a blown head gasket. I'd like to change the engine to a 351 Winsor - I'm told that fits with a C4 transmission or bell housing. I'd like to buy a car with the 351 Winsor and correct transmission to have the engine replaced/upgraded. What type and year car's and/or trucks used the 351 Winsor. I currently have a 289 CID engine with a 5 bolt pattern. Please help... I know very little...

Mid-70's LTD's had 351W's [up to the redesign in 1979]. Ford E-150's in the late 70's had 351W's also.

Tranny choice varied a lot back then. Everything was carbed back then also. Just stay away from those venturi carbs though I don't think those were around until 1978, 1979 or so.

If you're swapping out engine and tranny you better hope the motor mounts and the tranny linkage all fits, as well as the driveshaft length. This isn't for the faint of heart. Why are you not just fixing the head gasket on the original 289 instead of all this for a 351W?

I could fix the head gasket, but I was hoping to get a more powerful engine if I were going to spend the money on fixing the head gasket. I was told the top of the engine has to come out.... Plus the guy repairing said the radiator blew so fast... he isn't sure the head gasket is the only thing wrong before taking it apart.

Don't think there is a mounting or bolt pattern difference in the 351w and 289 block where the trans mounts. Maybe the modifieds and cleveland. The difference will be the transmissions themselves. Some c6's came either small block or big block bolt pattern but these are usually from trucks.

As for the 351w make sure you can get headers pretty easy or you may have an exhaust nightmare. The factory manifolds will be off cause the windsor is wider and taller than the 289. Front accessories may have to be modified also for the taller deck height. May need a new hood. Also why are you changing transmissions? The 289 and 351w should have the same bolt pattern so that trans for the 289 should fit the 351w.

It would be easier on you (and your wallet) to just fix the head but then we wouldn't be gearheads would we. I have a 514 with a straight drive in my mustang just to say I could. Too much money and head ache but I love it.

Anyone correct me here on this info? Never know with ford doing so many changes through the years.

there is no difference in engine mounting, and the bellws are the same, the only thing is you have to watch the counterbalance. Check out the engine forum below for these motors to learn more about it.

FORD 351 Winsor Engine... what models and/or years

Anyone familiar with the 351 Winsor engine. My 64 Ford Galaxie has a 289 CID changing because of blown head gasket. I've been informed that the late 70's LTD had the 351 Winsor, but I can't find any.. Anyone know of other vehicles that had that engine??

I bought a 76 Granada with that combo in it years ago for the motor and trans, out them into a 79 Mustang, what a ride! To get the C4 combo, you generally will have to stay in the cars, But if you don't need the trans it frees you up to many vehicles. Trucks, vans, T-birds, cougars are a few more that had windsors in them.
