Attempting to troubleshoot with no service manual a 1987 Full size Bronco. Have electric auto-engaging 4x4 have no lights on panel no click no engage. Checked all fuses first look good. Tried to trace wiring didn't get far. Any ideas about component replacement and locations of said items??
I also use trip-ode because fuel gauge failed in 1990. Thanks for any assistance.
hey ron, i also have an electronic shift transfer case, i also have a wiring diagram but that does'nt help you much. here's how i do it, if you have a tester with a light, the sharp kind, turn the ign. on find the wires that go in,see if there's any power if not the problem is back. if there's power find the wires coming out push the buttons and test there. it sounds like a relay problem to but im no expert. here's what happened to mine, this may be useful in the future, i would push the button and the lights came on and sometimes it would engage sometimes not, i took the shift motor off the back of the transfer case and pushed the buttons it worked fine[that's another place you can check ] i turn the input shaft manually and it turned too easy , had to drop the transfer case. there is a cnc machined piece of aluminum that the shift forks ride in and it has a tab that rides on a spring that snapped off . ron sorry if this was'nt very helpful, i just take my tester and tear it apart until i find it. good luck, hope yours is easier than mine was
Eric, thanks for the input. After finally finding an honest Ford parts guy with experience he says they sell alot of switches. I'm hoping to try that and check for voltages. Mine is totally dead! no lights or anything.
funny you should say auto hub problem i was going to mention them,if you get that transfer case thing fixed, and you have'nt already done it, ditch those weak auto hubs ,they will let you down. both my buddy and i went through the same thing when our hubs would'nt disengage in both cases only one would'nt work, his completly ate itself. eric
The switch for the Auto 4x4 wasn't the problem. The control module on the pax side right side of floor board is the computer or control relays. The unit has three separate plugs and just hooks at the top once the lower nut is removed.
Unfortunately the Item list from Dealer for $380 to $411 but after getting a quote for $285 on the internet the Dealer bent considerably. I had removed the cover of the old unit and with it plugged in was abe to actuate relays. ALL works great after replacement for the time being. F O R D...
The electric transfer case switch went on my '89 Bronco. My son was driving at the time, so I don't know the exact symptoms, but I do know that the dealer charged me about $400 to replace a solenoid that had rusted up, and then burned itself out, I guess when Junior held the button in too long. The dealer said the new solenoid that he put in was better sealed than the original, and I should never have that problem again. I've searched for a maintenance bulletin that might have talked about this, but without success. Anyway, the dealer was right - I've had no further problems with the transfer case.
