i have a 93 f150 i6 5spd and the clutch just started acting up today. it only travels about and eight of an inch before it catches and wont go into gear unless you pump the clutch a bti at first but once rolling it shifts fine. im ne to hydraulic clutchs and dotn know where to begin looking
First off, check the fluid level. There is a small reservior next to the brake master cylinder towards the center of the truck. This is your clutch master cylinder. Remove the cap, pull out the diaphram and check the fluid level. It should be level with the ridge inside the reservior.
From what you describe I expect you're low on fluid. Fill it up and keep an eye on it. You may be able to ride like that for a few days depending on how bad the leak is. Your probably due for a new master and slave like PaintSlinga. It's best to replace both at once and the new hose between the 2.
Do some searches for slave cylinder and clutch hydraulics. You'll find some good informative threads.
Sorry for the late response, I was away this weekend.
Not very complicated, but kinda heavy and tight to work on. Here's the short and skinny of it. There are lots of good threads on the site about this. Search for M5OD and slave and you should get a lot of hits.
-remove driveshaft
-remove shifter
-disconnect hydraulic and electrical lines to trans
-support weight of trans with floor jack
-remove crossmember
-unbolt and slide trans back and down
-check clutch, pressure plate, rear main seal etc while you're there
-replace slave and throw out bearing
-put it all back together
not awful to do. did it twice last winter in my driveway. replaced an old slave cylinder then had the new one fail about a week later. i was pretty unhappy about it, but these things happen.
very educational if you're new at turning wrenches
