My 99.5 has turbo mod# 1831383C92. I bought a used mod#1831458C91 that was suppose to be off a '00 model. Are the turbine wheels interchangable? I believe I have a damaged wheel and I bought the turbo for this part. If they are, I'm going to get the kit from Ron's Turbo and get him to balance it with my WW. Thanks.
Thanks, but now I'm not sure what the used turbo came off of. It has a 1.15 A/R turbine housing with no waste gate and a 1.00 A/R compressor housing with an actuator mount. My '99.5 has a .84 A/R turbine housing with waste gate and a 1.00 A/R compressor housing. If the turbine wheel is bigger than mine, I guess I have a turbo I can't use.
What I found is the van turbine (exhaust) wheel does have a slightly different curvature toward the end of the fins, which does make it slightly larger. The turbine wheel/shaft setup will not fit inside of the 0.84 exhaust housing. This is only on the exhaust side though, but I think KBell understands that. The compressor (intake) wheels are completely interchangeable.
The other option is to rebuild that 1.15 AR turbo (kits on eBay for under $100 and easy job to do) then put the van turbo on. Common upgrade for these trucks is to swap a van turbo in place of the stocker.
Is the turbine wheel the one that's damaged? If so, how did it get damaged?
Thanks for the info. I'm not 100% my turb. wheel is damaged. I just want to be prepared for the worst. The reason I think I have damage: When my truck was new I could get about 18 lbs. boost. I added a Superchips 1705 performance program later and could see 24 lbs. I didn't really check this over time because I had no reason to check the maximum. I got a WW and a friend helped me swap out wheels. We didn't pull the turbo off of the engine. We removed the compressor housing, used an air impact(I know, don't say it) held the socket so that it wouldn't spin, but would get a slight impact to loosen the wheel, and spun it off by hand. We spun the WW on by hand. Everything felt good, and putt everything together. We checked to see if the turbo would spin freely, and attached the inlet air tube. Started truck, no problems, test drove and could only get 15 lbs. boost. Very upset, and removed WW, installed stcok wheel, and still only 15 lbs. Disconnect wastegate actuator line and plugged. Test engine, still 15 lbs. Remove all intercooler boots and intake boots. No holes. Reinstall every thing. Pressure checked between commpressor outlet and intake with 20 psi, no obvious leaks. Checked boost gauge tubing and calibration. Still could not find a problem. Do not see any indication of exhaust leaks to turbo. Truck runs great. So, in my feeble mind, it has to be damaged turbine wheel or damaged waste gate. I'm open for suggestions. What ever I do, I have to do over the weekend. I have to have it during the week.
