Homemade BHAF Mod?

Has anyone done a homemade BHAF ( Big Honkin Air Filter) mod in a non turbo IDI truck? I'm thinking about doing one to my son's 89 7.3l F250 we just bought. I think if I relocate the window washer and overflow bottle it could go there but I haven't measured. I've seen the ramair setups but see a concern with water.

BAHF, I haven't heard that one before! I don't know if anyone has done that before, but ram-air has been done several times over. I have run mine for over a year now and never had a problem with it, others have run them for much longer. Unless you are crossing water thats up to the grill, there shouldn't be any problem. Some claim as much as 4spi of boost at 70mph, but I never measured mine without the turbo.

It's a popular mod to the 1st generation Cummins. You basically take a huge big rig air filter and put it in an open box with a tube going to the engine. I was thinking about adapting it to the Ford but space might be an issue. The ram air is probably the better bet.

Really? does it make a big difference? Diesels certainly need all the help they can get when it comes to breathing, thats why turbocharging works so well on them. If the truck doesn't already have it, you may want to consider a 3" (or larger) exhaust.

Luckily the truck has a brand new 3" exhaust. One less expense. I'm going to check the air cleaner as I doubt it has been cut out. The truck was owned by a man who is 80 now since new. It only has 89,000 miles and has the c6 trans. Thank God.( I replaced a 4eod in my 1992 460 Crew cab and it cost me 3 grand.) The worst thing is he didn't know anything about SCA's but had changed the coolant every 2 years.

I don't ford streams up to my headlights, rain has never been a problem with my ram air.

Snow however is another story.
The first winter I installed the ram air, I was plowing snow, it was almost white out conditions at times.
Suddenly at about 3 AM the engine lost lots of power and then the engine died.

Found a coat of frozen snow had built up on the air filter, choked it off.

Now I just unhook the hose from the ram air scoop to the air box when it is snowing, no problems in several years.

On the 86 model, the air intake is 6 square inches in area.
The scoop I built is 40 square inches at the front of the radiator shell.
