For NumberDummy

This question is aimed specifically at NumberDummy, although anyone else can chime in if they know. The VIN on my truck is F10AK8242XXX. What does this tell me? Can you tell me where to go to decode this if you don't have time to do it yourself?

Thanks in advance. If I could email you, I would.

Good info so far

Thanks Bertha. I appreciate the information. If I may ask a follow-up, in the stock version of that truck, what was the rear end?

Late to the party again...

Ford 9 inch, prolly a 3.70-1 or 3.89-1 ratio. Post the rest of the numbers off the plate..it can be decoded here.

The full VIN is F10AK8242748. I haven't gotten underneath for any other numbers (part, engine, etc.)

I don't need that..look on the door face near the latch...that's where the VIN plate is. The numbers from the plate are what I'm asking about.

The door plate is missing. I had to go to the frame on the passenger side to find the VIN. Almost got my vehicle impounded for that little snafu.

Missing door plate, what else is new...

For the rear end info, look at the 10 bolts that holds the pumpkin (carrier) to the housing. The ID tag is at roughly 4 or 5 o'clock as you are looking at the front of the rear end. (The tag could be missing too, again that's nothing new).

If it isn't a 9", what else might it be?

Some had the Dana rear end, these have a plate on the rear of the diff. the gears came out the back. The 9" the center section, with the ring and pinion comes out the front as a unit.

I have a 44. Does anyone know the stock gearing of those rearends? Associated with that, what would a good gearing be for a 240/3 spd to increase the trucks drivability at around 55 mph? The motor is currently running pretty high RPM at those speeds and I would like to run those down a bit.

Thanks
Justin

5 different ratios offered, and most Spicer (Dana) 44's from this vintage have locking rear ends: 3.31 / 3.54 / 3.73 / 3.92 / 4.09.

6T6Shorty: you have a Spicer what? No Spicer 38's used in 1961/72 Ford trucks. I never heard of, or have seen a Spicer 38 in any Ford truck.
