Question Brake rotors

Hi and thanks to any who can help. I've watched this site for a year now and got some very valuable info but I've never had the need to post before. I have a 96 with 4 wheel drive and I'm doing a front brake job. I've removed the caliper and hub after going to the parts store 3 times to get the correct size hub socket. Now I'm trying to figure out how to remove the rotor from the hub. Is it pressed on or does the hub have to be replaced as well? Thanks.

theres the first nut you have to take off in the hub, then pull the lockring out, then remove the next hub nut then it will just pull off

I believe the Hub part with the studs on it is pressed on to the rotor, if this is what your asking, you have to get an air hammer and bust it apart, well i did cause thats all i had avaiable to me at the time. Hope this helps

Hammer the wheel studs out of it, makes spliting the rotor from the hub easier. You can tap them back in. Torquing the wheel nuts drive around the block and re-torque them. This will seat the studs back to where they need to be.

I agree with Cuda-Slim.

*I, Cuda_jim, nor Club FTE assume any responsiblity for over-torqued studs, broken bolts, split knuckles, loss of front hub assembly while driving, so on and so fourth. You assume all responsibility for mods or procedures preformed by yourself or those you seek out. You are preforming this work at your own risk and we strongly recommend the use of eye, ear and hand protection.*

clearsound, i plan on replacing rotors in the next couple of weeks and i was told to just pound out the wheels studs to separate the two. i imagine that it will still take some prying, beating, swearing, resting, repeating etc. to separate them. report back how it goes, i am interested to see how tough it's gonna be.

After getting the hubs off using a pick and a small hammer (hate that round nut, Does anybody have a tool that fits it?). You can beat the studs out of the hub and rotor and they should just fall apart. They did on mine. Then to put back together pound the studs back into both using a BIG hammer and a punch (so you don't hit the rotor accidently). It is not really a bad job except for that @#$^#&@! nut. Did I mention that I hate that thing

It was the spindle nut. It was smooth around the perimeter and had holes drilled in the face of it all the way around. Darndest thing I have ever seen.

I think Neal is talking about the locking washer thingy that goes between the two spindle nuts. Pretty much the best way to get that thing out is with two 90* picks. having the truck on a lift at chest level helps alot too but thats a little more expensive!

It has been about a year since I did it so memory is cloudy. Yes I remember the two nuts and vaguely remember how the lock washer worked but I believe one of the nuts was as I described. I remember once I got it loose enough to spin it I took a test light and stuck it in one of the holes and spun away till it came all of the way out.

Does this shake-up your memory. Don't get the 2 spindle nuts switched. It really messes things up, don't ask me how I know.
