So I replaced the worn out rag joint on my 66 yesterday. I wasn't sure where the clip went right at the firewall so I guessed. Now I get a click pop kind of noise right at full lock on the steering column. It sounds to me like its coming from inside near the wheel. I loosened that clamp and pushed the column up so I could pull the rag joint out maybe I knocked something loose in the column? Any thoughts? It seems like the bearing right at the firewall is worn out too I saw a couple posts that mention replacing this but none say where to buy it. Is it a dealer part or do some of the vendors carry it?
Suggest isolate steering column by disconnecting the steering box, or rag joint, then release tention on the bearing in the steering column by loosening bracken between rag joint and firewall. If it does not eliminate the problem then likely faced with pulling column. There are a few Ford part supplier's who have online catalogs you can browse, couple listed below. I usually browse the catalog but then call to inquire if in stock, I have waiting weeks for back ordered part. There are few supplier's like LMC, National Parts Depot (NPD), Blue Oval, Carolina Classic's, to name a few. Suggest in contacting various suppliers to request free catalog, if for no other reason than for pic's of disassembled components. Don't recalling it costing more than $20 to replace all bushings and bearing nec. to rebuild. If turn signal cam is broke,or worn, this would be opportunity to replace. Also suggest ordering extra horn brush. If replacing turnsignal harness becomes nec. the pins in the harness connectors can be removed with tweezers, or something simular, so don't need to cut wires.
Steering column bearings...there are two, both are the same. One is mounted in the upper flange, the other is at the bottom of the steering shaft. You'll need to replace the plastic retainer also. The parts are common, and fit many FoMoCo cars and trucks. They are sold by NAPA and Ford.
