Have a 96 PSD with 293000 miles on it. Its been running fine until about a week ago. The truck doesnt want to crank when the motor is warm. Its turns over fine, but it wont fire at all. When I do get it cranked it runs rough and lacks a lot of power. The RPMS will go up to about 2000 and stays there until you hold your foot on the gas pedal for a few seconds. The RPMS will gradually rise. Have seen that the Cam Positioning Sensor could be the problem. Is there a way to check it??

You say up to 2000, I am thinking that you mean 200 and then gradually climb. after it gradually rises and gets to idle does it run fine after that? CPS is a good place to start. There is a new CPS out there that is 25 - 30 bucks at the dealership, instead of the 150 -200 also they are available on ebay. Also when was the last time you changed your oil, did you put any additives in when you did so, and what kind of oil did you use? it also sound like a possible foaming problem.
I also had a similiar problem but not as bad and it turned out the oil was bad. I change it regularly but I had been doing alot of heavy towing and the oil broke down faster that I expected. Other than that Cuda Jim is probably right.
Welcome to FTE. if you truck will start better when its cooled down with cold oil. then like Cuda Jim said you need injector pressure regulator (IPR) o-rings. The kit is about $40 last time I bought one. The IPR is a bit of a bear to get to but if you unbolt the fuel filter housing and push it as far to passengaer side as you can you can get to it.
What happens is the o-rings wear out and allow too much oil pressure which fires the injectors to bypass back to the oil pan and the warm thin oil won't build enough pressure to light things off. These engines require about 480 psi to fire the inejctors.
