I have a 2005 Excursion and I have a front hitch from Curt. It can do a 9000lb line pull. I am looking at winches and was wondering which ones you folks would reccomend. It would not be for rocks or heavy off road use, but for pulling out of mud and recovery. (yeah, right, a Excursion rock rig. That would be something different.)
dont dare put a 9500 on a excursion if you ever plan on pulling yourself out!!!
a 12000 would be a minimum for me especially if its lifted or has off-road tires...
if you got framed in that excursion, even a 12000 pounder might be sketchy, i know stock super duty's that have got stuck and burnt up 9000-10000lb winches...
get the #9000 and a ****** block, since the winch mount is only rated for #9000, then you run the line back to the tow hooks. If you plan on using a winch with any regularity on that big of a vehicle you might look into a better mount and bigger winch, but for occaisional use it'd prolly suffice

why is it everyone thinks they HAVE to have the biggest and best? it may not fit his budget!! if he only really uses it a couple times a year then a used 9500 will be perfect with a couple of ****** blocks. i used my warn 8274 (8000lb upright winch) HARD on several pulls, broke my AmSteel Blue 3 times and the winch just asked for more. mind you this was on my 85 F250 supercab longbed with 460, 39 iroks, one tons front and rear. that truck was heavier than excursion garaunteed and i single line pulled it out draggin axles the whole way
i mean, with that mind set we all should be running 30 ton PTO winches b/c you just never know!

im just saying ive seen more 8000-9000 winches burnt up when they are in need the most, and those are on 1/2 ton trucks, an excursion is a heck of a lot more vehicle to pull, why take the chance on knowing if your winch is strong enough. a 9000 compared to a 12000lb winch doesn't cost much more, if your already going to spend close to 500 buck might as well save up the extra 100 or so and get somthing you can depend on!

I know my hitch is rated for 9000lb single line pull, and I could use a 15000 winch with ****** blocks and probably not tear up the hitch. Budjet considerations are not too constricted.
However, I would rarely be using the winch for recovery from mud. Once or twice a year at most. I expect it would be used more for pulling lawn tractors out of being stuck!
Anyway, I have 285/75-16 tires that are only slightly larger than stock, and the Excursion weighs 7450 lbs empty with fuel. Do you think I would need a 1500 with this weight and tires using it only once in a while for recovery?
Also, I see you are recommeding the Warn winches. Are they the best?
being that size and the amount you would use it and what you use it for most you could prob. get away with a 9000lb winch but.. on the off chance you get that beast buried, the once or twice a year or whatever, there is a chance that the 9500 wont do it, and the 12000 isn't much more money, if your budget is open like that...
