IFS Dana 44 on an 82 Bronco

I have an 82 Bronco with the Dana 44 IFS up front with 3.55 gears. I have heard that you can drop a "third member" out of this axle to help with the gear changing. Is this true? Anyone done this, or know of a tech article where this is done.

thanks

Murph

odinmurphy, if you look at the axle from front of truck you will see the oil filler plug on the front of the axle. this is surrounded by the bolts that hold the housing ( pumpkin! ) to the aaxle assembly. just think of it as a great big rearaxle cover!. this is usually sealed with "form a gasket" on the back side. once you pull out half shafts, it is simple to get unit out.
make sure to reseal thoroughlyand torque bolts evenly on reassembly.

Actually, you'd want to look at this page, not the previous one.

Thanks for the links. I will most likely be lowering the gear ratio in my Bronco to 4.10, wil a locker in the rear, and possibly a lock-rite in the front.

thanks for the help.

Murph.
