TTB 44 or 50 swap to straight Dana 44
I have a 1981 ford f250 4x4 with a 400m and C-6 trans. Im building a mudtruck out of it and it currently has the TTB front suspension. Im wondering if its the Dana 44 IFS or the Dana 50 IFS or what do i look for to tell what it is for sure. Now id like to do a solid axle swap and i found a Dana 44 straight axle for a decent price. The guy selling it says its out of a 1989 f250 4x4, it is complete except for the hubs. Im wondering if my truck does have the Dana 44 IFS front end would my hubs, bearings and brakes fit onto this Dana 44 straight axle.

The straight axle is no stronger than the TTB D44 in stock form. The only real difference is the extra u-joint in the axle shaft. You can upgrade the TTB D44 with a D50 inner axle stub and step up to a larger inner u-joint if you're dealing with breakage there. Theoretically speaking a TTB D44 should handle 35" tires, a straight axle D44 again, 35" tires unless you start upgrading, and a TTB D50 should handle up to a 37" tire. If you want to go bigger you need to step up to a D60, D70, Rocks, or portals.
Also, it was just recently asked about what parts swap between the two. Long story short: lockouts, calipers, center chunk (bearings included) are all you can use. Rotors may or may not fit depending on years.
So honestly, a D44 straight axle isn't going to do diddly for you in the mud without upgrading it. I'd personally run what you have now and save for better upgrades in the future. There's no point in spending money for a lateral movement.
