What is the difference if any between our stock turbos and the turbos off of vans? I thought I saw a thread once about people switching out their stock turbos for van turbos. The reason being I just put a whole van engine in my truck and was wondering if I gained anything from it?
Its a mod the super duty 7.3 guys do. Bigger exhaust housing and diffrent compressor wheel map. They do this mod because the van turbinators dont have intercoolers so the compensate with bigger exhaust wheels and housings, no wastegate and a diffrent compressor wheel map. Faster spool up, more airflow. But im pretty sure the van turbinators are the same as our stock turbos.
Steve is right. The OBS van and pickup turbos are the same as far as I know but one th superduties the van turbo is non wastegated with a larger exhuast housing. The SD trucks have a .84 exhuast housing and the vans have a 1.15 I think. i believe the intake side is the same on the vans as the trucks but this mod is a superduty thing.
the van turbo has a broader map than our trucks and flow more air. the superduty truck turbos map is slid down the rpm range a bit and not as broad and dosnt flow as much as the van turbo but still more than the obs turbos. ive got a van turbo on my truck and its much better than the stocker was even with the 1.0housing on it.
i originally did this since im gonna put a turbonetics bb turbo on the truck when i build a new motor and i got a killer price on the van turbo brand new.
