I've had my '96 Eddie Bauer for 18 months and I was wondering if the auto hubs are really as bad as their reputation and if I should switch them out before they go. Secondly, I don't have the owner's manual and didn't know if the "engage" procedure was the same as it was for my '93 Explorer. They say you can engage the 4wd up to highway speeds but I've heard you can prolong the life of the system if you try to lock it in at very slow speeds to minimize stress. Finally, what should I check to find out if I have a limited slip differential? I just found this site and any input would be greatly appreciated as I think Broncos have more genuine personality and no-nonsense purpose than any other of the sport-"pukes" being built today.
This has been my experience with auto hubs. A '91 Exploder with auto hubs that broke at about 76k miles. The '95 350 had auto hubs and the left one was out when I bought it. Both now have Warn manual hubs. I would not want to depend on auto hubs in a pinch, depending on what type of roads you travel, you might have a long way to walk
Check the door sticker for axle code. For example, H9 is 3.55 with LS. Just a 9 is 3.55 no LS. An LS rear diff will have an H in the code.
To check if you have LS, or to check if the LS clutch pack is still good, engine off, auto trans to Park, put the rear axle up on jackstands, release parking brake. Grab a rear wheel and try to turn it. If you can turn it relatively easy, and the other rear wheel rotates the opposite way while you are turning the near wheel, then no LS, diff is open or clutch packs worn out. If its an LS in good shape, you can barely turn a wheel. Remember to release the parking brake.
my 96 bronco's auto hubs blew out @ ~ 28k miles...was caught in a sand pit/dune area on a beach.i bought the bronco new in 96 and used the 4x4 about once a week and maintained it well. WARN prem's are on my wish lift for Christmas.
Good advice the others gave you here too!
You may want to buy a manual so you can maintain that 4x4 sys esp the "electric shift motor" in your xfer case...keep it clean.
Good luck!
I have a '93 w. auto's and 110k that seen light use of 4wh. drive. No problems at all. However, as you can see in this thread alone, alot of people have had different stories on autos. As I'm going to be doing more 4 wheeling now, I'm switching to Warns too next week just to be safe. I'm def. going to miss the autos though as I'm admitingly lazy at times:-)
