auto hubs

My automatic hubs are acting up. They seem to work OK when I'm traveling dow the highway in snow, but if I'm traveling slowly, i.e. backing into my parking spot, they won't engage. Also, if my truck sits over night or longer, they seem to unlock on their own while sitting and my needed 4x4 won't be working to get out of the parking spot.

My question is, is it OK to just use the manual hub locks for now in the following fashion? I've been leaving the hubs manually locked so that when I need 4x4 I can just click the dash lever to 4x4H on the fly, even at highway speeds i.e. 65 mph. Is there a problem with doing this? I'll get my auto hubs fixed come Spring, but for now I don't have time to mess with them and need 4x4 for all of this Sierra snow.

No major ill effects except the added wear on the front driveline because with the hubs locked it will turn the axle shafts, differential, and front drive shaft along with t-case internals. Which all will decrease fuel mileage if you follow it.

I ran mine like that for a week or so last year. It does affect the mileage. I finally replaced the hub seals and wheel bearing on the driver's side. SOTF works now.

If it's an individual hub causing the problem it probably wouldn't hurt to block off the vacuum line so the pump wouldn't run all the time.

DTR (RIP) has a good video on it.

Thank you for the replies. That's what I was hoping for, a little bought time before having to get it repaired. Not much time right now, and it's too freaking cold and snowy to crawl around no the ground too.
