Tailgate locks by itself... sometimes

Every now and then I go to open my tailgate and it is locked. I know I did not lock it. Is there a mechanism in the tailgate that locks if I hit a bump or something, sort of a safety?

2002 Ford F250 4WD, 5.4L V8 Supercab. No power options.

mine did that too when i first got it, used new truck.
after a couple blastings with the pressure washer at the car wash it has not done it in a for a while now.

im interested in this as well. its freaking annoying when you have to shut down the truck to open the tailgate.

i have an 02 f250 4x4 7.3L CC.

I have 02 f250 took it to dealer who installed new lock mechanism but new lock still does samething, pain in the but !!!

My 2000 F-250 does the same thing.

That's bizarre.

There's a plate that can be removed on the back of the tailgate... something like 8 torx-head bolts... Gives you access to everything... see if anything's loose or easy to move... maybe a rubber band in the right place will fix it

Mine does the same thing. What I've found is that you need to spray a good dose of WD-40 or a similar product into the locking mechanism. It just gets gummed up. Mine will act up every once in a while.
