Question mysteriously locking tailgate

The tailgate on my 2002 F-250 will lock without being set by the key. This happens after the tailgate is unlocked and the truck driven (I have heard other accounts of similar trucks with the same tailgate locking problem). This seems to be a malfunction- am I missing something?

My buddies 01 did the same thing and under warrrenty they put a rubber o-ring or gromet kit in on the latch/handle mechanism and it has not locked on its own since. My 03 has never locked on its own. Hope that helps.

Put your tailgate down and take the panel screws out, remove the panel and spray the crap out of everything you see with a spray lube, it will fix the lock problem and you will be supprised how good the gate latch works!!!

this is true, i simply sprayed some Zep in the latches themselves, this fixed my problem, took about 10 seconds, works like new.

My 2003 F150 Tailgate did the same thing. There was a service bulletin from Ford about the problem. Took truck to dealer and they fix under warranty. May be the same problem for the 250's

since it's the same tailgate, im sure it probably is, but i'll stick to occasionally lubing the mechanism rather than having to pay actual money to fix it

My next door neighbor is the service writer at the dealership where I bought my truck, he told me that is what they do to 90% of the trucks that come thru there and it works like a dream. Only takes about 15 min. to do too.

Mine does the same thing, but I actually look at it as a feature. If I forget to lock the gate, at least it won't get stolen while I'm asleep because it locks itself.
