Talking Limited slip or locker

I have a 1996 CC f-350. The rear axle is original and dosent have either at the moment, but I 'm getting tired of the left rear tire spinning all the time instead of both, so my question to throw on the table is what have you guys done or heard, that works well. I certianly dont have a lot of cash to put in it but I figure that its going to take either a limited slip or a locker. What do you guys prefer or use? Thanks

I have a limited slip in mine. I would worry about a locker snapping an axle or grenading if you do some tight menuvering while loaded real heavy. with a locker, all rear tires will move at the same rate. So if you make a tight u-turn the inside tire will want to travel at the same speed as the outside tire (that why a performance car will chirp a tire while turning real hard. its the inside tire trying to keep the same speed). A limited slip will allow the tires to run at different speeds under stress, but wil give you both tires spining say in a burn out. Look toward auburn or detroit for a 10.25" limited slip.

If I were to do this to my truck I would use the Detroit Truetrac. It is a limited slip that will lock up if you spin but won't make you truck squirerly on slick roads. Plus a locker will eat your tires faster. They are pretty easy to install if you have some skills.

Talking Locker

It was my understanding that the locker was something you would turn off for tight manuvering, and for when the extra traction is needed then you push the button and your fully ingaged to both rear tires. Also dosent the limited slip rear ends have clutch plates that wear out after so many miles? Has anybody put one of either of these in? I have had my axle apart, but I still 'am little skepitical about doing this. Anything big to worry about, such as things lining up right or smoothness of operation? I thought that it was just a bolt on assembly, but can you mess it up. I'm really not leaning either way. I just want to find the best option. Thanks

There are 3 Different types of turn on/off lockers. Electric (posible wiring problems), Air lockers (again, if you have electrical problems the compressor will not operate and no air=no locker), Third type is a locker made by OX. It is a cable operated locker. They say yuou can feel it when it engages so you know its engaged. But, they dont make one for our Sterling axles.
All others like the Detroit true-trac and the auburn gear and such are automatic.

I personally could not understand the reasoning for having a locker at all. You are not planning on drag racing your diesel I am assuming. I have a limited slip rear end and it works just fine. There are occasional times where the weight on the rear is offset and one wheel will dig and the other spin, but it does not happen too often.

I would go with a aftermarket limited slip unit. A selectable locker is also an option but not very practical for daily drivers unless its a full time limited slip then when locked its a locker. if its an open diff/locker then it wouldn't be really effective in daily situations (raining, heavy traffic from a dead stop, other times when you are not planning to need extra traction.

I saw some auburn limited slip units on ebay for just over $350. The stock limited slip is very limited unless it build tight. I just installed a stock unit on friday. bought on ebay ($150) new bearings ($50) and now that it is installed I found out its clutches are worn too much so I will be installing a new $100 clutch pack. So you see where I am going with this. I might be looking into an aftermarket unit for about the same price! Wasn't planning on that!

If you off road much and can afford it, a selectable locker that when not locked is limited slip would be a good option.

the only selectable locker available for the 10.25 and 10.5 are the ARB.

ive got an auburn pro lock in the back and a ox locker in the front.

i wish i could have put a electric locker in the back. but the auburn does pretty good.

oh yeah if you put new gears in the rear get the factory ford gears. precision gear's dont setup worth a crap and are noisy.

genuine gear set up better but are still a bit noisy. for the extra couple bucks the ford gears are well worth it for the rear.

as for the dana60 the genuines i think are just as good as the dana gears.
