Holmatro gives an excellent class. My department has taken every class they have. When I was Chief, we made to move to Holmatro. Thier tools are way better than Hurst.

I wouldnt put Halmatro any better than Hurst. We ran Hurst equipment and never had a problem. A neighboring department had a Halmatro combi-tool and it would get hot after a lot of use and have to cool down. Now it was a great peice of equipment due to the light weight as long as you were only cutting up one vehicle and on an emergency scene it never failed to do its job, but, it wouldnt hold a stick to our old 80lb spreader and and our cutters had a lot more power. I would put up a Hurst any time next a Halmotro.
We went through the training several years ago with AMKUS , but our town council changed after an election and they decided we didnt need extrication equipment.
Have you ever tried to do even something simple like get a door open at a scene with just hand tools and pry bars?

It will take one of the council members or one of there family members being trapped in a car and having to wait on mutual aid department to get there with equipment to realize how important this equipment is. The small rural VFD I was Cheif of operated on approximatley $8500.00 annually from United Way, Local Tobacco tax and Al. Forestry. If we needed anything extra we had to raise the money our selves. We raised the money for our Hurst Tools, they were used and we got a good deal on them, but , they are in excellent condition. There are also some really good grants out there from FEMA and Home Land Security. Check with the tool manufactureres they may also hsve some grants or assistance programs. Rember City Council cant tell you that you cant have something, only that they wont pay for it.
Sorry, didnt realize that you were from Canada. I dont guess FEMA or Our Home land Security would send money out of country. I am sure there are available grants in Canada through your Emergency Management Agency.
The funding was part of it, but mainly they decided that we shouldn't be in the auto extrication business. Since the Fire chief answers to council, they have the last word.
What in the world do they think a Fire Department does? Who does the extrication in your area? If there is not a group or organization that does it and somebody dies because it wasnt provided then the local government could be held liable for not providing addequate emergency coverage. I dont know how things work in Canada as far as responsibilities but here the county or city is responsible for providing that type coverage unless an outside agency is doing it, such as a private run service. It all comes down to the right person or there family member has not been in a bad situation and not had that service available. You let a council member or one of there family member get involved in a bad crash and be unable to get extrication there in a reasonable time, then, watch how fast they decide they need to upgrade there emergency services.

The main problem is, that most council member and fire commisioners are still living in the days of horse-drawn pumpers. They have no clue of what the fire depts role is in modern times. Fires account for about less than 10% of our calls.
The majority is motor vehicles incidents, haz-mats, other types of rescue calls. We fought for yrs to take over extrication in our town because the first aid squad could no longer handle it. Our commishioners fought us tooth and nail over it until they finnaly gave in. After seeing us use the tools on the first extrication call we had after receiving them , their whole additude change towards us doing it.
Amkus users out here in L.A. County. I remember the arms on the early Hurst tools flexing and twisting if they weren't perfectly positioned. We used Holmatro for a short while then went all Amkus. Corona FD inSoCal used to host a 2 day seminar on extrication that had all the mfgr. out with their equipment doing the training so you could get lots of good ideas.

Good job, somtimes city and county officials are real bone heads and dont have a clue what is really going on.
