Riding Lawn Mower

I have more or less, inherited a riding lawn mower from my father....He got a new one, since he thought there was excessive noise in the old one. It would probably have lasted for him for some time.....!
At any rate, since my yard is not really a huge undertaking, I did attempt to use it on the front yard. It looks like I had it scalped. That was on the highers cutting possible, six, I think it is. On his yard, it did o.k. but honestly, my yard looks as if has been scalped. I will not use it anymore, as I take quite a bit of pride in my yard. Is there anything I can do do raise it up a bit more......? I really have no idea as I have never been a big fan of riding mowers. I think this is as Murray mower, with a briggs and stratton engine. The thing works great, the end result is just terrible.....Nomadic

get a cart and use it for hauling stuff around the yard. I love my craftsman, it's got plenty of hp for taking care of business.

Post a few pics or at least a model number, and you will have a better chance of people bieng able to help. Pretty much every riding mower I've ever used you can adjust grass height from about 1.5" to 4" though, so I would think you should be able to adjust it somehow.

If the height adjustment isn't working, you can look at setting the rollers if it has any. My rider has the rollers on the front and back and you can adjust them to keep the scalping from happening due to uneven terrain.

Good luck

check the deck and make sure that all the bolts/washers/etc are there... i can remember scalping half my lawn once 'cause a bolt/washer fell off the deck and was rubbing on the ground.

of course, i didn't notice 'cause i was too busy drinking... water... yeah... uh... that was it

My experience with riding mowers is mostly stuff a lot older than what I think you're talking about...

Mine has adjustable wheels on each corner of the cutting deck, and a non-adjustable roller centered front and back. It also has an adjustable stop for the hydraulic raise/lower function, which you are supposed to adjust to stop the deck slightly before the wheels hit the ground. If you've got wheels and an adjustable stop, figure out how to work them to hold the deck higher.

You say you've raised the deck to it's highest setting, which should be somewhere around 4", I would guess. Not to question your ability to operate the machine, but are you certain you didn't lower it all the way, instead of raising it? Does the deck move up and down (i.e. not stuck down) when you move the handle?
