there are others that can give you more details, but here are a couple of details.

both the 7.3 non-ps and ps were made in 94, it was split year for ford. about the only thing that they have in common is size 7.3l and both diesel. the biggest difference is that all power strokes are turbo and the power strokes were controlled by a computer (or electronics controlled) where as the pre-ps (or idi as it's called) had no electronic/computer control.

the other items such as hp are improved with the ps. the fuel filter system is different, etc.

Biggest visible feature is IP, injectors and steel fuel lines are on top of the IDI........ PSD are under the valve cover.....

I always thought the most significant difference is that the Powersmokes are Direct Injected (DI) - the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber (a.k.a. cylinder), whereas the pre-Powersmokes are InDirect Injected (IDI) and the fuel is injected into a separate pre-combustion.

I've always understood that the fact that they are Direct Injected is the reason for the fuel injectors being under the valve covers, and their being computer controlled. I don't think turbo vs. non-turbo really figures into the equation, since they made fractory tubo-ed IDIs for at least a couple of years before introducing the Powersmokes.

Anyway, that's how I've always understood it to be....

Oh yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with anything you said at all - I saw the word "visual" in your post and understood why you used it in that context....

I just expanded on it and described the mechanical reason behind the differences - in terms of both the visual AND the additional electronics....

The difference between an IDI and a PSD is about 1 million dollars when you price out every part brand new, combine the total and compare.
