strange noise
I have encountered a noise towing 5th wheel tues on hills,which sounded like ripping burb (as close as I can describe) happened twice for 3/4 noises both times truck was in fourth gear and at 80/90 kms 55miles..I was not leadfooting and was not fan noise as I am aware of that sound..dealer in town was no help..could it have been turbo?? did not loose antifreeze and trans was flushedat 47000kms now 80600kms on speedo(50000 miles)I am baffled to what the noise was ..noise stopped when I eased up on throttle..any imputs??

Someone else posted a video clip with similar symptoms a few weeks ago. Cant remember the title of the thread. Basically the consensus there was that it was either a sticky EGR valve or sticky turbo vanes. In the other guys case it sounded like the turbo was overboosting which can cause blowback as there is no waste gate in these turbo's. Most refer to the sound as a "turbo fart or burp" because of the sound it makes. With your truck being an '03 and the mileage your at, you could have some buildup on the EGR and turbo. It was very common on the early build 6.0's and I'm pretty sure it is still occuring, though not as bad on the later models.
