My ft-145 was black at 12,000 miles. Normal from everything that I have read.
Is that the part # for external trans filter FT145??? I went to my dealer to get one and he needed a vin# ,model # Plant # ect.. so I just gave up.
Thanks
FT-145 is the correct Motorcraft number for the external transmission filter. Napa has a crossover for about 20 bucks. If you are past 3 year 36,000 mile the napa is fine. "DO NOT" use the Napa oil, fuel or air filters. Stick with Racor and Donaldson made filters for these applications.
hi, i'm new to this site but was wondering why so many people really don't like the napa filters? also to stay on topic when i did my tranny flush my external filter was also very black while the fluid still looked clean so like they said seems like its doin what its supposed to.

I just had my serviced today and the inline filter was black as well. My tranny tech (well known in area) said its normal, especially when towing, and confirms its doing its job.
Scared me at first since it was nasty but all is well now
My F350 has 68K miles, I changed the external filter and it was also black. I used the Motorcraft replacement (I use Motorcraft for all filters of fluid) The new filter looks like a miniature role of toilet paper ! I wanted to unroll some to wipe my....hands with.
When I did my OEM external filter it was black too, but I added a Dieselsite tranny filter on top of it. I did this when I put the M-H tranny pan on, changed the internal pick up filter and OEM external filter. So now I have three filters for the tranny fluid but I don't think I'll change the internal one until I need to pull the pan again. The other two should be more than enough...
I have a 2005 king ranch with the 6.0 L in it and i am not sure where this exteranl tranny filter is, was under it today while it was on a hoist getting a magnaflow turbo back exhaust system on it and I could not see this filter. Where would it be loctated?

Underneath, right front corner of engine between engine and radiator, round aluminum filter housing.
