i have a 68 mercury and i was driving it the other day when all of the sudden my steering went all crazy after pulling over to inspect the cause i found that the bearing on the end of the column was destroyed, do i have to replace the whole column because the bearing looks to be press fit in or can the bearing be replaced any help would be great.

Bottom of the column, correct? There IS a bearing and retainer on the lower steering shaft (readily available), but they are inside the steering column mast jacket and impossible to see without removing the column.
Are you refering to the steering shaft rubber coupling? That would cause the "crazy" symptoms you experienced, if it failed.
