I have synthetic Mobil 1 in my 5 speed manual, and I notice it is a lot less stiff on cold days - almost like no difference from normal temperatures, while the regular atf that came from the factory was very stiff when cold.
I'm running Mobil 1 Mercon V in my 03 Ranger 4.0 with 5 speed auto. Also, since it is a 'multi vehicle formula' (mercon/dexron) use it in the transfer case. Seems to work good.
I bought the truck with 26K miles, and the transfer case (mercon) fliud was pitch black. After running the M1 for 16K, the fluid is still cherry red.
I sometimes get a chuckle when I visit the oil board. They are so concerned with the engine oil, have it tested every change, and argue as to which oil is the best, API ratings, etc. Nothing is ever said about automatic transmissions.
The later auto trans are very expensive to repair. You can drop a couple of grand real fast. The biggest enemy of an auto trans is heat. Standard trans oil will degrade very fast after 200 degrees, as much as 50%. The auto should use synthetic oil, and have a cooler. Proper operating temp is 170 degrees, no more than 190. jd
I read the entire label on a bottle of Mercon V, and it doesn't say that it is synthetic, but it does say--
-Provides increased protection against deposit, rust, corrosion and wear.
-Improved low temerature shifting
-Guards against transmission shudder
i do know that motorcraft 75/140 is full synthetic and engine oil is synthetic blend, with full synthetic available.
