My dad has a 2005 F-150 FX4 with the 5.4L triton and automatic transmission. We are going to change the transmission fluid here in a couple days and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what type and brand to use? We have been using Amsoil synthetic oil in the engine, and will probably use the Amsoil ATF synthetic transmission fluid unless anyone says otherwise. Any recommendations?
Any brand name should work, I always subscribe to the term, "you get what you pay for". If you're just pulling the pan off, and changing the filter, you will still get only part of the dirty fluid out, converter has a bunch too. I've had a couple of older vehicles in the past that got the converter tapped in two places and a plug threaded in when the trannies got rebuilt. Very easy to drain the converter that way. Drop one plug to the bottom, pull it out, rotate the converter 180 degrees and pull that plug. It all drains in a minute or two. Unless you take it to a garage that can flush the whole system, I guess this is the only way to get it all out. An old time trans mechanic once told me that if everyone serviced their tranny once a yr, he wouldnt have a job.
to be safe guy, use ford motorcraft trans oil and stay away from the syntecs in your trans. baitmaster has given you another reason i fully agree with. you can get it all out on a drain and many syntecs are not compatable with the old dyno type from the factory.
baitmaster
i fully agree with that old timer if people did that i would also not have my job.
