Well, I've gotten to the point in this project where I need to make a major decision....Which bed to use. I'm working on my 76.....I pulled the cab and front clip off and now they're on a 75 Highboy frame with a 2" body lift. I have the rest of the body lift blocks to raise the bed to match, but I have always loved these older trucks with a good looking flatbed. the flatbed may be of some use too, I want to install a gooseneck so I can haul may trailer. Any way. If I get a flatbed it's gonna be a shiny aluminum one. And the styleside bed is in good shape, came from southern NC(with the rest of the truck). Pics of your trucks with similar setups would be nice too Up here in OH i could sell this clean a bed to get most of the money to cover the flatbed....also please keep in mind the body lift the cab/nose are on and the truck is gonna have stacks. would the flatbed look dum if set on the frame? Pics of the 76 are in my gallery....I don't have but one pic of the 75, might get it put in there.
I hate flat beds. I think it is a lazy mans way to finish a truck. I am not saying you are lazy especially if it's sole purpose is to tow. I like original!!! Makes the truck look great and you look like you took the time to finish it properly.
Personaly I like the org. much better. But if that box is rust free and you want to get rid of it, just let me know. But anyway, your the only one that can answer that.
no pics to date- but go to my gallery, look at the "BIG UGLY" and imagine that exact truck minus the front clip and no bed on it and the cab is red. workin on redoing the cab and frame right now, swapping in a tilt column, and converting to true powersteering, no power assist. Also, I converted it to married style tcase. Before you swear at me, it is for a good cause. First off, I had drive shafts to do it so i didn't have to have anything made. Second, the body going on is an automatic, the orange/white body was 4 spd. I wanted to keep the auto, and I had a married style sitting in the barn already. I was just too easy to say no to. Plus now, I have the divorced NP205 to use on a different project down the road.
Well, I'd also say use the Rust Free Bed you already have, BUT, I don't think having a flat bed on it will be all bad either. I have seen many Highboys with flatbeds and if the flatbed is a nice one like the one your talking about, I think they look pretty cool. A flatbed on something that is not lifted looks like crap IMO. I don't know what it is, but flatbeds on lifted trucks look cool. But, just way the pros and cons if your usage with each bed.
Side note: True "power steering" is illegal without a secondary steering system (backup). Everything is "power assist."
Are you just upgrading to a better "power assit" setup?
With "True power steering" if you break a PS hose, you lose all control of you vehicle.
Sorry for tossing the wrong words out there- I am upgrading from the system on the 75's to the system from a later model, without all the rams, and actuators etc etc etc.
