The tuner is going to help out with the trans shifting pattern and allow it to downshift better when it needs it and also control when it shifts into OD and back out when it needs it. Much better than Ford's stock strategy. The higher octane programming will add that much more power to it. I think for the price, the tuner is gonna help the trans out, which will give you the best bang. I really liked my Edge Evolution I had on my 06 F150. It made a world if difference in performance (yeah, there are better, custom tuners available) I picked that one because of the display feature. It worked for me. Good luck and let us know what you finally settle with. If it doesn't work out, you can always list it and try something else. It's not like a major truck mod that's hard to undo.
Does the Edge tuner require an aftermarket thermostat like the Hypertech?

dude, the Hypertech does NOT require an aftermarket thermostat what-so-ever.
Hypertech "recommends" it, but they do NOT require it.... You can run a cooler one, but I haven't......
and with my emails back and forth with Jim at hypertech, it's funny that they recommend one, HOWEVER, "all of our testing is performed with a completely stock truck"
so why they recommend one, other than the fact that they sell two versions of stats, i have no idea.....i asked them how much of a difference it makes and they said they don't know because their tuning IS with the stock thermostat....you might want to check your references.

Edge didn't recommend one and my truck was stock as well. I never really used the 93 octane program much anyway. The stock program settings that come as a default in the programmer should be fine. They are a canned, "good for every stock truck" setting. You can however adjust some individual settings which may affect temperature, trans line pressures so forth, those may then affect the truck over a long period of time (worst case). If in doubt, stay with the settings as uploaded and tweak each only when you have the ability to check the results, temperatures, pressures etc.
