If I were going all out, I'd get the F450. Looks like it'd be cool! Can't afford one though, as it costs about as much as I paid for my house. I too would wait for a year or two and see what kind of problems people have.
I like my IDI. If I had it to do over, or the 7.3 cavitates or whatever, I'd get a 6.9.
I spent some time on the 6.4L forum, and my opinion is that the truck is over rated. Although it is the most powerful diesel engine ford has offered to date, the fuel economy is not even close to that of a well tuned IDI diesel. For the first time since ford offered a diesel, there is little difference in overall performance when compared to a gasser asside from a little extra torque.
When I look at the "all new" 08 superduty, I realize that it is still the same truck, except ugly (at least it is in my opinion). All that is different on the outside is the face and fenders, not what I would call "all new", but ford is not the only one who is guilty of reskining a vehicle and calling it a new one.
I don't know, if I were in the market for a HD diesel pickup, and planned on spending upwards of 60 grand, I would expect better than 14mpg. But for that kind of money, I could just rebuild my f250 from the ground up, for $60k? Theres no telling how far one could go to build a truck the way it should be.
The frame has changed, suspension changed, a new front superstructure, a totally new interior, a new back window, new motor with dual turbochargers, and the list goes on. The carry over parts are some sheet metal, exterior door handles, bed floor and inner side, and exterior windows, except the rear one. I would hardly call that re skinned... but i guess that is subjective, as is a vehicle's appearance. It is a bit early to start judging the new motor, but we shall see. As for the fuel mileage, the motor hasn't been around long enough to really see how it performs mileage wise. Diesels take longer to fully break in, and I wouldn't expect the greatest mileage because of the new emissions equipment anyway... I look at comparative fuel mileage... gas to diesel in the same truck, that is why i would buy the new truck, especially towing, and for longevity... Overall the 2008 is a great overall truck, but the price puts a whole new meaning on sticker shock, especially seeing that my trucks now work just fine...
wait about a year or so then buy one so they have all the lettle problems fixed i wasent meaning what do you think about owning one i was more along the lines of how you felt about the old 6.9s and 7.3s vs the new 6.4s

Apples vs Oranges. Emissions standards have changed, safety has improved a lot, prices have skyrocketed...
When I see a brand new truck, I think "wow, that cost a bundle". When I see a truck like Dave S has, I think "now there's real a truck"
- Old, cheap (sort of), maybe a little slow (can be overcome), relatively easy to work on.
vs
- New, expensive, more power, harder and more expensive to work on (more things to go wrong).
Very well said.... I'd like to see someone roll an 08 off the dealer lot and work it like Dave S. works his truck.
My opinion, I paid less for my Peterbilt 379 than the new 08 Superduty costs and my Pete makes me good money too boot!!! Again, apples vs. oranges, but money is money!!
Well in my opinion they are junk. I am a die hard Ford man. I have 6 Fords including a 1930 model A but we have several 08's at work and they are junk. Walk around in the bed of one. It is like you are walking on the hood of my 83. You couldn't drop a load of channel lining in one like on TV. It would go through the floor of the bed. I hate to say this but I drive an 06 GMC service truck at work and the new Ford truck won't hold a candle to it for ride, confort and power.
I AM A FORD MAN. DON'T KILL ME OVER THE GMC REMARK. IT IS CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND IT KILLS ME TO HAVE TO ADMIT THAT.
