Difference between Clifford Matrix 50.5X, Python 990, and Viper 5900
Does anyone know what the real difference between these three alarm/remote start units is, if there is any? I know DEI owns all three companies.
Also does anyone have any feedback on these units, or recommendations on different ones? I can get any of these for right around $250 and my cousin will install it for me (He installs remote start/alarms on vehicles as his second job behind being a GM tech).
I don't know the difference Beerstalker, but I've been looking at that Clifford unit...primarly because of the auto-start and the turbo timer.
I have a Clifford on my Mercedes, as well as the Suburban we used to own. The alarm has been on our Mercedes for around 7 years and the only problems we have experienced have been due to non-alarmed-related electrical issues.
They are identical. DEI is notorious for using the same exact model across all brand lines. The just change the name & model #. This way they can support all there independent dealers that only carry a specific brand, and not have to inventory 500 different alarm systems. Also is makes it difficult for the average consumer to price compare against different brands, because most people are not aware that DEI owns all the different alarm companies.
The only truly different and unique model line is the Clifford G5 Series, which happens to be my personal favorite DEI line, as it was an original Clifford design that has been updated by DEI since they purchased Clifford. The rest of the Clifford line is just rebranded Python/Viper equipment.
Clifford is their low end brand.. Python is worst then that and Viper is their highend.. They all pretty much are the same.. It's just personal preference.. I choose viper because I just like them.. Plus the name is catchy ;-) I have the Viper 5900 system and I'm about to add the front window roll downs.. It's great and the remote start is awesome!
Yes I have seen the 7900, but it doesn't have the 1-mile SST technology that the 5900 or others have. Evidently they had to drop that to add the color screen. Not worth it in my book.
Yes, if you want the 2 way function to be worthwile. The one mile range is probably like most other range estimates, it's taken in a perfectly flat place with no trees, buildings, other radio/electrical devices around. In the real world where you are inside a building with all kinds of other electrical and radio interference it is going to be much less than that. So if you are in a place like a mall or movie theater, and want to know if your car alarm goes off, you are going to want to have the longer range.
Do you really need a color screen, when your keys are probably in your pocket 90% of the time?
That's what I am trying to figure out. They all seem to have the same features, I was just wondering if they had different build quality, or other features that aren't listed on the websites. I know they aren't exactly the same as I have seen kits and they have slightly different colored and shaped plastic parts, but maybe the circuitry inside is the same?

You hit the nail on the head, circuitry is the same inside the box. Since DEI basically bought out about every alarm compnay around they have slowly homoginized the whole product line into the same products with different names and colors.
This cuts down on manufacturing and inventory costs for them. Only thing left of the Clifford line is the "G5" stuff everything else is basic DEI product.
