tire size problem
tire size problem
Hi,
Could anyone possibly say what brands of tire makers make 275/70 R18 tires? If possible, as "Off-roader" as possible (AT, MT etc.)
We SD owners here in israel are in a little bit of a problem. the law here is VERY strict as to not changing the tire size, without a written permit from the car factory. though in the US many change the sizes (most of the times not even close to the original) the dealer/importer won't allow any of it, so we are stuck with the original size, and the orignal tire (continental) is $h!% for offroading...
thanks,
eysham

Here's the only thing I found on tirerack.com.
Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires.
What if you put on a different size OEM wheel? Say, 17's. Is that allowed? The tire selection is much greater with that rim size.

Thanks for the reply.
I saw these too but they are not offroady enough.
!NO! changes are allowed. the only thing allowed is the original that came with the truck from the manufacturer... stupid law but that's what we have to live with.
people that change sizes are pulled over and forced to call a tow truck to the nearest wheel/tire shop, along with a nice ticket...

I agree with Monsta. The only tire I can find in that size by Continental is the one you got, no other options. The only other tire I can even find in that size is the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor that was mentioned by Monsta but it IS a much better off-road tire then what you have now.
What if you change wheels, to a 17" which is available from the factory on that truck, but then use a different tire size that adds up to little or no net tire change. Example: 275/75 R17 is only 25mm taller than a 275/70 R18 same width but this will still limit your options because the problem is the 275 width or a 285/70 R17 is only 11mm taller but is 10mm wider but opens up the tires available.
Just how "VERY strict" is Israel on this and Why?

I must have been working on post when you sent yours. So they are strict! Another stupid question but what about a 33x10.5x18. It reads in a different system but is the same as 275/70 R18. Only 4mm shorter and 8mm narrower. Still a limited number of options but is the only other thing I could think of. You say the Wrangler is not good enough but you got little choice. Good luck!
There are a few more. Cooper tires has at least 3 in that size: Discoverer ATR, Discoverer ST, Discoverer STT. The STT is the most aggressive and specs the biggest of the three, even though they are the "same" size.

Here's a couple more that are available in that size. I happen to have them bookmarked because I'm trying to decide between them in a 285/70-17 for my '05. I had the Nitto's on my '01, and they were good everywhere but in sticky mud, don't really know anything about the Bighorns, but they're close to the Buckshots which I have on my '91 and they're the best go anywhere tire I've ever owned.
