sick of smelling old car exhausts, and getting dust when 4x4ing...
Is there a way to bypass the "Max A/C" ****, so that I can get the air to circulate instead of outside air comming through the vents when using other fan outputs such as feet/front/windshield ?
i mean: Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the A/C to see what color wire needs 12V to change the air intake deflector for circulation?
The vacuum comes from the engine on a gas motor or a vacuum pump on a deiesel. When you move the **** to Max, you are changing a valve that applies or removes vacuum to a diaphram that moves a door. If you look above where the passenger's feet go, there is a rubber hose there that possibly is the recirc. door (i never checked it myself...) Play with that and let us know what you find.

Did you ever find a solution for this? It's always amazed me that japanaese car have had the button or lever for "fresh" or "recirculatin" for like 25 years and American cars have never bothered to add this much needed feature.
Not exactly true. My Chevy has a re-circulate button so does the F-150. HOWEVER, NONE and I mean NONE work on the defrost position or the foot position. Problem is the intake for the recirculate function is usually right about the passenger's feet. Any moisture from melting snow, rain, puddles etc. is then pulled in too. That can create condensation on the windows and cause visibility problems.
If you're gonna try and change it. Start thinking relays and a stand alone switch. Might be the easiest way to trigger that vacuum pulse switch.
Why don't you just use the MAX A/C function? It is the most efficient position for the AC. Is that you want the air coming out of a different vent??
thanks for the tips. Well, the issue is if the a/c is on anything other than MAX, like vent or heater, then one has to deal with smelly air in traffic.
I once saw where I guy fabbed up a cabin air filter from a furnace filter. It went in the intake below the windshield wiper. It was pretty cool and effective if I remember correctly.
after a few japs and euros, this is the 1st American car i own.
the 1st was a 1978 Alfa Romeo.
All of them had this feature to select intake position reguardless of the output direction. none had a problem with it.
now, I thought about putting an electrical switch, connected to a solonoid relay, to open/close the right vaccum pipe.
the only thing is that i havn't yet to discover the correct vac pipe color/location.
Have to disagree with you a bit, eysham & bigtexan, I think the US car makers have the right idea- the average driver is fairly ignorant about things technical, and the car companies know it. I cannot tell you how many Toyotas and Hondas I see driving around here on a mild day with their windows fogging up! I think that making defrost automatically go to outside air and turn on the ac compressor is a better way to go with the average driver in mind.
In your case, you need to look for a vacuum line over by the passenger's side foot well. IIRC, it is black with a white stripe. Experiment with that one, and get a 3 way air valve- you can get ones that look like a toggle switch.
