I Just Recently Bought A 1986 E 150, 5.8 4barrel. Been Setting Several Years, With Very Little Use. (2700 Mi.) Rebuilt The Carb, replaced Fuel Pump, new Fuel Filter, New Plugs, Acc. Pump, Checked Egr, Checked Vac. Advance, All Seems Ok But, It Idles Fine But Wont Take Gas. Totally Dies For About 10 Sec. Then Runs For About 3 Then Dies Again. Impossible To Drive. Anybody Know Whats Causing This?
Turn the engine off, and while looking down the carb throat, push the throttle back. You should see two strong streams of gas pour into the engine. If you don't, there is something wrong the accelerator pump system in the carb. Possibly left a check ball or needle out during the rebuild?
Dave, I checked fuel when throttle was pumped. Lots of gas!!! Idles perfect, takes gas when setting and idleing, put it in gear and forget it, cant get it to take gas at all.
Could it be possible that the somthing in the tranny is stuck not allowing it to rotate? Or somthing else in the drivetrain? Cause if you can rev it up out of gear and it dies when you put it in gear that might be somthing to look at. Just thinkin out loud here. Is the clutch draggin on the flywheel?

Take the vacuum advance line off and plug it. Now what does it do? If it runs terrible all the time like this, then I think you might need to re-tune the mixture and the idle setting with the vacuum line off. Then find a port on the carb that does not have vacuum at idle, only vacuum when you rev the engine. This is where the vacuum advance needs to be plugged in.
Gearhead351, Auto Trans Ok, Engine Won't Take Gas Off Idle, I Think Its A Carb Problem, So I'm Trying Every Suggestion Dealing With Carb. I May End Up Replacing It.
I'll Try Dave's Adj Tomorrow. Thanks Guys!!
Nothing helped, so i took the carb off, took off primary bowl and found an o ring not seated and tore on the brass pump passage tube that goes from the primary metering body to the main body. solved 95% of the problem. $.25 o ring caused me about a weeks worth of frustration. my fault, I put the kit in the carb. (MY FIRST) THANKS FOR THE HELP!!
