Unhappy 80 E-100 emissions problems

I have a 1980 E-100, 4.9L I-6 w/manual 4-speed transmission. I recently went through emissions testing and failed miserably. Very high HC and CO numbers, but NOx is good. It hasn't been driven very much since the last time it passed emissions testing; about 2 years ago. The idle is rough and sounds like it might be mis-firing. I changed out the plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, and ignition module. It has the Duraspark II ignition system. I also changed the air filter and breather filter. Still runs rough.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I'm now thinking I have a vacuum problem because there seems to be no vacuum at the vacuum advance on the distributor housing. I started by checking the air pump and I noticed that the hose from the outlet on the air bypass valve is just hanging there with some sort of fitting on the end. I'm not sure of where or if that fitting is supposed to be connected to anything. Or if it broke off from the intake manifold or catalytic converter.<o></o>

I haven't had the time yet to narrow down what this fitting is and where it should go.<o></o>

Also, is there a guide of some sort as to what the abbreviations on the vacuum schematic mean? Some are obvious, but some are not.<o></o>

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks<o></o>

Here is a few of them:

AIR BPV = AIR ByPass Valve
CPRV = Canister PuRge Valve
CARBON CAN = CARBON CANister
EVR = Egr solenoid Vacuum Regulator valve assembly
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve
SOLV = SOLenoid vacuum Valve assembly
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor
VRESER = Vacuum RESERvoir
MAN VAC = MANifold VACuum
DIV = air DIverter Valve
FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator
PCV = Positive Crankcase ventilation Valve
TAB = Thermactor Air Bypass vacuum solenoid valve
TAD = Thermactor Air Diverter vacuum solenoid valve

I'm now thinking I have a vacuum problem because there seems to be no vacuum at the vacuum advance on the distributor housing. I started by checking the air pump and I noticed that the hose from the outlet on the air bypass valve is just hanging there with some sort of fitting on the end. There are two hoses from the air by pass valve. One goes to the smog pump, the other goes to the check valve on the smog manifold. What has happened is the upper half of the check valve has come apart with the upper half still attached to the hose (this is very common). The manifold will still have the the lower half of the valve. The check valve attaches to the manifold with a male thread. Take GREAT care removing the remains of the old check valve from the manifold. Soak it well with penetrating oil. If you force it off, it will twist the smog manifold, and those are tough to find. The check valves are easy to find. I'm not sure of where or if that fitting is supposed to be connected to anything. Or if it broke off from the intake manifold or catalytic converter.<O></O>

See above....

I'd like to thank subford for the vacuum schematic abbreviations and NumberDummy for the Check Valve information. From what I can tell from my Haynes manual and from what NumberDummy described, it sounds like the check valve has in fact broken off from its mounting pipe to the exhaust manifold and that this is probably the main cause of my trouble. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

I'll let you know what I find when I get time to work on this over the upcoming weekend.<o:p></o:p>

Thanks again!!!<o:p></o:p>

Just curious about where cverbick lives that requires a 1980 vehicle to pass emissions testing. Here in Texas, I've been told, emissions testing is not required to pass inspection on vehicles 25 years of age or older.

Also look into the possibility that a vehicle with truck plates can be exempt. It's what I do in VA.

In New York we have the 25 year exemption also. But the flip side of it is he was looking for fix for idle and gas mileage. I was confused about why a 25+ Van would need emmision testing, glad I do not live there. Hope you get it running smooth and get the mileage up, not getting any cheaper.
