From what the OP stated, the problem was with the shaft length. The part numbers all changed in 1973/74. Prior to 1973, the shafts fit back into the early 60's.
from what the parts house said the 361 and 391 both used a larger shaft on the bottom of the dist. The people I got the truck from said it only needed a fuel pump. I put that in found out it had no oil pressure and over 12 quarts of oil in the pan. the dist would not engage the oilpump drive they are two different sizes. the dist I pulled out will drop into the block it came out of and that is the only one it fits I have two other FE engines and it will not work on either one of them. I really think some one Modified the block so it would fit. that sounds about right for what I am finding on the rest of the truck. find an eaier way rather than do it right
Jim, I think you may have made the water as clear as mud. The 361 & 391 are FT (truck) engines and while very similer are different from FE (auto & light truck) engines.
Thanks, I am still going with all FE dist. are the same fit in a FE block.
They do fit.
I upgraded my '66 352 points to a Duraspark II ignition system using a '76 390 distributor and wiring harness out of a '76 F-150 I scrapped.
Fit right in.
Frty7ford, I wonder if you have an FT instead of an FE engine? They look almost identical - until you get them side by side.
I know that possibility doesn't make sense, since you said the electronic distributor was out of the 390, and I know the FT distrubutor is larger than the FE.
(There is a bushing that fits down into the FT block to allow using an FE distributor in it. According to some who know more than I, that bushing is still available from Ford.)
But I gotta ask the question.
