Small block - big block are chevy terms that are often used imperfectly to try to describe certain Ford engine families. The 351M/400 has the same bore spacing as the 289/302/351W/351C and would more properly fit in the chevy "small block" category. The 351M/400 has the same larger bell housing pattern as the 429/460 except for a few that are known as the FMX 400 blocks that have the small 300/289/302/351W/351C bell housing pattern.

BTW- The 400 is just a 400, not a 400M or a 400 modified, -just a plain 400. The letter designations are only used with the 351C/W/M

actually the 400 ( No M) is considered a small block by industry standards

It shares the same bolt pattern of the 385 series.

Ford has engine families not Big Block/small block names.

If you're looking to modify the performance of your truck, keep the 351W. There are many more parts available, and its cheaper to build. The only way I would swap in the 400, is if I was going to use it mainly as a tow vehicle.

I will be towing sometimes but not alot. And when i do its a a camper which isnt too heavy, or maybe a couple 4 wheelers. I don't nee 500 hp i do want to modify the performance a little, i like to have a little power, and i just love the sound of an old ford carbureated engine with a nice cam in there. I think im going to stick with the 351W, my only problem now is whether to keep the manual tranny or to switch it to an automatic...

keep the Manual less friction ie hp loss. depending on how it is driven it can get better milage that the auto. and you would have to buy either an adapter kit to get the ony you have to fit or another trans.
