351W or 400 modified

Hey yall, was gunna buy my dads 97 f150 4x4 but decided to get an older one instead so i can work on it myself, and i like carbuerated better, but im buying a 74 4x4 with a 351W and a manual trans, its got an all new drive train, needs a little body work but not much. With it comes a 78 rust bucket, im going to strip all the good parts off of it and jsut get rid of the body. The 78 has a 400 modified with a auto trans, i was just wondering what the better set up would be for my 74, the 351W with the manual trans thats already in there, or the 400 modified with the auto trans, or i guess i could even put the auto on the 351 or the manual on the 400. I kind of like the 351W engine cause ive heard really good things about them and i would like to have the automatic but not sure if i can swap it. Anyways just wondering what yall think.

You can pick up an adaptor, or if it's a common transmission such as a C6, just find a small block bellhousing.
First things first, find out what automatic it has.

The 400 will put out way more torque than the Windsor. Mileage will be pretty similar, but less with the 400. Gas is $3.07 a gallon here, so I'd be opting for better fuel mileage.

i know it wouldnt be too bad to swap the 400 auto with a 351 manual, ic an do that, but how big of a deal would it be to set up the automatic with the column shifter and all

C6 has the bell housing built in and not removable
C4 has a removable bell
lose the column and get a floor shifter is easiest
jegs sells B&M that are high quality and good price

I'd go with a floor shifter also... Lokar makes a good unit as well.

Use the column out of the parts truck if you go with the auto you can also use the pedal hanger. But for milage the 351w/manual tranny is your best bet c6 trannies have a lot of friction and take more hp than most.

yeah, right now i have a 98 ranger and ge 26 mpg so im definatly used to better milage, what kidna of milage can i expect with this truck, my dad has a 97 f150 and gets about 15-17 so im used to bad mileage with his, if i decide to keep the 351w with manual what kinda mileage can i expect, also what kinda mileage would i get if i put a auto tranny on the 351w.

You'll get anywhere from 10-15 mpg with the 351 or 400... you'll be a little better with the 351. You might average 13 around town with a light foot and a good tune on the 351W, most people see 10 with the 400, I get 13/17 with mine.

i'd say anywhere from 8 15 depending on how you drive it, but if you have a ranger that get good mileage drive it everyday and make the 74 your toy
