Ok, So i had to replace the rear pinion seal on my diff last night. book said that i needed a puller to get the yoke off of the spline in order to get to the seal, went to AZ and they told me there is no such tool and to just hit it off with a hammer. So i did that , after about 15 minutes of hammering i got it off and replaced the seal put it all back together and checked the fluid level.
Now (2 Days later) i am driving down the read and a hear a little while from the rear end when i let off of the pedal. So when i get home i check the fluid again this time when the little bit runs out of the fill hole it is sparkley and has a decent amount of metal in it .
I have a road trip in 2 weeks, shoudl i just drain the fluid and put new in and check to see if it gets worse?
What could i have messed up?
any one have links to some good rear ends?
How did you put it back together? If you hear something, its done its damage. Did you check your backlash, or did you just leave the interior alone, replace the seal and tighten the yolk bolt back up? You may have knocked the pinion back and unless you used an impact on it to pull it back forward you may have unseated it from the front bearing and caused the gears to grind. These diffs have no tolerance for mistakes. Dont ask me how I know. Where in Ohio are you located?
Yep this is what happened. You accidentally let the pinion move towards the ring gear. When you bolted it back together you can not get enouph torque to pull the pinion all the way forward without an impact gun. Just cant do it by hand. So now its gonna be a pain the ****. I really cant explain backlash, I can only do from feel. Most guys use a dial indicator and the book will tell you the thousands of play it suppost to have.
yes that is the pinion grinding into the carrier. you may have thrashed your rear end already. I suggest you bring it to a shop who is good with differential to have them check it out. Once a diff starts making noise the damage is already done
if it is junk you will probably just need bearing and a pinion and ring gear. the carrier will be all right with those markings on it. More than likely yes the pinion was not tight enough or the bearing was going out prior to your seal install and that caused the leak in the first place.
your rear axle is a sterling 10.5 inch. Your gear ratio is either 3.73 or 4.10. there should be a tag attched to one of the bolts on the diff cover. it will have some numbers on there that should match one of those two. if your not sure post all the info on that tag. if there is no tag check the door jam sticker on the drivers side door jamb. there will be a axle code there. post that if you need to.
I would not order that kit yet though til you find a shop to do the work. many shops won't install parts they didn't buy or they may have a better source. but having all the info never hurts.
