Make sure you have the tubes flushed, and the hub bearings cleaned out. All those pretty metal shavings in the wheel bearings will destroy them aswell. Hope that helps
Good morning. What do the edges of the ring gear teeth look like? Are they sharp and grooved or are they still machine cut squared? My first clue is the metal shaving have to come from somewhere. I didnt think the pinion could fall that far down to score the carrier. Your best bet is to drop that diff to save the r and r on that.
How far did you drive it? It it just flakes or shavings? The pinion yoke should always be pulled off. Some yahoo didnt know what they were talking about. A simple three jaw puller would of saved you a lot of trouble. You might still be able to save what you have if it isnt ground to a sharp point or chiped. Look at the gear teeth to see if they are still square shaped or sharp on the the tips. If they are still square you might still be good. Backlash is the amount of play between the ring gear and the pinion gear. usually measued in thousands between 6-10 thousandths, This is where the dial indicator comes in. However if you drop the center section out. ( You will have to pull you axles) you can check the pinion pre load and see just how loose it really is. Good Luck hope you didnt trash it.
This is why when you replace the pinion seal you MUST install a new crush sleeve, though it is much more work, it will insure everything is correct when you are done.
