I looked into OD units. I can get an AOD from Lentech with an adapter for under $3000.00. I could use a E40D from a 460, but I would have to change my EFI computer, and those things are so large, I might have to enlarge the transmission tunnel in my truck.

The bottom line is that It's not worth it to me.

Yeah i get that same mileage in my 82 f-150 flareside with a 351w warmed over to 350hp. I'm also running the same gear and a toploader, i did have 3.00:1 and 2.80 before and the the 3.00 dropped the rpm by i think 3-400rpm and i did not lose mileage, never did really check it though.

What about the gear vendors over/under drive. about 2500.00 busk and you can run 3.50 and end up at about 2.8 final drive. Lots of flexiblility...wondering as i'm thinking of doing the same.

The Gear Vendors is in the same price range as the Lentech AOD.

I'm afraid that the drive shaft would be too short in my short wheelbase '53 F100 with the additional length of the Gear Vendors unit, and I'll have U-Joint problems.
