1997 Air Conditioner doesn't work... can I test it?

1997 XLT 5.0 AWD

The compressor never runs.

I suspect a low charge, but I was wondering if there are any tests I can do to help determine if it may be some other problem before I put it in the shop. Is there only 1 fuse to check for the A/C system? Can I check for voltage somewhere, like the low pressure switch connector to see if the compressor *should* be running... but isn't because of a low charge? Is there anything else I should check?

you can buy a low pressure gauge and hose at Auto Zone... at rest the high and low sides will both have maybe 100 psi of gas inside. when the comprssosr starts, the low side drops to 30 and the hight side goes up to about 250 psi. it you have 100 wihen not running, and the compressor will not start, then you have some elect problem.

My compressor lost its charge over the winter and wouldn't kick in and run either. After charging it now runs okay. Next time I'm just going to get the kit from Wally-World and do it myself.
