I have a 1997 ford explorer and both back doors cannot be opened from the inside. They operate fine from outside. I replaced one interior handle with a broken hole where the rod connects. I have cleaned , lubricated and messed with the child proof locks to no avail. they became in-operable almost at the same time . any ideas ????
There is a gear tooth on the handle mechanism that breaks when folks get to zealous trying to open with the child lock on. The only fix is to replace the inside handle.
That being said, have you tried to manualy open the door by the rod inside the door panel?
I also get the same problem and I have to replace the two rear door handle. This is surely a bad conception from Ford, effectively there is a broken theet in the gear mechanism of the handle. They cost me about 40$ CDN each at a Ford dealer. I have seen them on ebay for about 5$US plus 12$ shipping but I'm not sure of the quality.

on a similar note, my daughters door locks on mustang were week and not pulling (1998). i bought aftermarket on e-bay for about $12.00 for the pair. took 2 hours to do the first one and 30 minutes to do the other after i figured out how to mount it... they are made "not in america", but quality dont look much different than original "made in mexico".
